Matt Smith thanks US fans as Doctor Who makes TV Guide Christmas cover for first time

The actor salutes "a huge, huge accolade" as the show graces the front of the long-running US listings magazine

Matt Smith and his bow tie will be a feature of coffee tables across America this Christmas after Doctor Who fans voted for the show to feature on the cover of TV Guide, America’s longest running TV listings magazine.

Now in its third year, the Fan Favorites Cover Contest asks viewers to decide which series should front TV Guide’s Christmas double issue. The magazine said Doctor Who fans had galvanised support “through countless blog posts, message-board comments and tweets” to beat big-name American shows including The Walking Dead, The Vampire Diaries, and Pretty Little Liars.

Smith called the news “amazing,” adding “Thank you to everyone who voted, because this is a huge, huge accolade. Fans mustn’t underestimate their role in the emergence of the show in America.”

Doctor Who airs in the US on BBC America and has a dedicated stateside following. Seasonal special The Snowmen airs there on Christmas Day just hours after it is seen by BBC1 audiences.

TV Guide was first published in 1953 and celebrated its 49th year in 2012.
