Benedict Cumberbatch experiences Star Trek fever in Japan

The Sherlock actor, his co-star Chris Pine and director JJ Abrams are on a tour promoting sci-fi sequel Star Trek: Into Darkness

Despite being straight off the plane after a 12-hour flight from the UK, Benedict Cumberbatch looked to be enjoying himself as he met Japanese Star Trek fans in Tokyo where he is promoting Into Darkness, the sequel to the sci-fi movie reboot.

After touching down at Narita airport, Cumberbatch was first seen wearing sunglasses and iPod headphones but had soon removed them to get up close and personal with fans, shaking hands and signing autographs.

The actor plays the as-yet unnamed villain in director JJ Abrams’s highly anticipated follow up to his 2009 blockbuster. Yesterday, a poster for the movie was released, apparently providing the first offical glimpse of Cumberbatch’s character (if only from the back).

Earlier, the Sherlock actor’s co-star Chris Pine, who plays Captain James T Kirk in the new film, had also arrived in Tokyo to a warm reception before the two stars came together with director JJ Abrams to begin their official work promoting the movie.

Star Trek: Into Darkness is released in the UK on 17 May 2013.
