A sequel to the 2010 hit TV miniseries The Pillars of the Earth will premiere on Channel 4 in the new year.
Starring Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon and Spooks star Peter Firth, as well as Miranda Richardson, Ben Chaplin and Charlotte Riley, World Without End – just like The Pillars of the Earth – is based on a historical novel of the same name by best-selling author Ken Follet.
Directed by Michael Caton-Jones and produced by the same companies who worked on The Tudors and The Borgias, World Without End promises war, plague, treachery and law-defying love.
The new drama series is set 200 years after The Pillars of the Earth, in the same fictional English town of Kingsbridge. World Without End is set after the King is killed at the orders of his wife and their son installed on the throne. As the Hundred Years War, the black death and political turmoil play out in the background, Caris, a young apprentice played by Wuthering Heights star Charlotte Riley, begins a passionate love affair that will affect the future of Kingsbridge.
Golden Globe nominated series The Pillars of the Earth aired on Channel 4 in autumn 2010. Starring Rufus Sewell, Eddie Redmayne, Hayley Atwell and Matthew Macfadyen, the hit series focussed around the construction of a cathedral in the 12th century.
