Trillion-selling popstrel Justin Bieber has become the latest celebrity to be interviewed by Oprah Winfrey for her series Oprah’s Next Chapter – in a programme to be broadcast in the US on 25 November, with a UK transmission the following day on DMAX.
Two clips from the encounter, which was filmed in Chicago, have been released. In the first, Bieber and Winfrey lunch at what looks like a traditional gentleman’s members club. Winfrey has some sort of salad, while Bieber favours a simple jumbo bowl of chips.
Sitting in high-backed leather chairs and ignoring the delirious fans peeking in through the window, Bieber discusses the difficulties of conducting a relationship while holding down a job as the biggest teen idol in the world.
“Sometimes we gotta take the back exits and do different things,” Bieber says of his efforts to go on dates with singer and actress Selena Gomez without the paparazzi joining them.
The interview was recorded before the pair’s highly publicised recent rocky patch, which began when Bieber rashly took an underwear model to see The Lion King, but appeared to end yesterday when they were photographed dining together in New York.
Bieber – who wears his hair in a high, almost Jedwardian quiff for this segment of the programme – goes on: “I never make her separate from me. I don’t want to make her feel that I’m ashamed of her. A lot of guys in the business don’t want to be seen with a girl, so they’ll make them ride in separate cars. If we get away, we get away together, at least.”
The second preview clip sees Winfrey take Bieber on a private shopping trip to a posh department store. Winfrey, who attempts a British accent upon entering the shop, recommends a cashmere Ralph Lauren polo sweater as a fallback gift anyone would be glad to receive, and confides that she herself likes owning the garment in many different colours.
Bieber, whose hair is flatter now, impresses the host by instantly naming several of the colours. “Red, pink,” he says, pointing to the corresponding items.
“This is definitely the colour, though,” says Bieber, dramatically removing a purple pullover from the shelf and sharing his love of the colour with Winfrey.
The full programme can be seen on 26 November on DMAX (Sky 144, Virgin 172).
