It seems there’s no escape from the Angry Birds, not even in a galaxy far, far away… as today marks the unveiling of Angry Birds Star Wars.
Due to be announced at the Times Square branch of Toys ‘R’ Us later today, Angry Birds: Star Wars is the latest themed version of the popular app to be developed, and the Force-tinged game will be released next month.
Players will control avian avatars of Star Wars characters like Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia, who’ll be pitted against the porcine Empire and its hog-like Stormtroopers. Play will take place in recognisable Star Wars locales like Tatooine and Hoth, and John Williams’ stirring theme has been re-worked for the title screen.
Taking pains to explain that the characters in the game aren’t simply Angry Birds in fancy dress, LucasFilm’s vice president of licensing and consumer products marketing Paul Southern said: “They are not Angry Birds dressed up as Star Warscharacters, they are characters in their own right.”
Angry Birds Star Wars, which will be released on iOS, Android and PC platforms on Thursday 8 November, will be also accompanied by a line of tie-in merchandise made by Hasbro including an Angry Birds Star Wars Jenga set and a range of plush toys.
Since being developed for Apple’s iOS in December 2009, there have been over 1 billion downloads of Angry Birds across all platforms. It was announced earlier this year that an Angry Birds TV show will debut on “all possible devices” this autumn, with a movie based on the game to follow in 2014.
