She’s just released her first novel for adults, The Casual Vacancy, but Harry Potter creator JK Rowling says the next book she publishes will be a return to children’s literature.
“The next thing I write will be for children – or [rather] the next thing I publish, will be for children,” said Rowling, speaking to an enraptured audience of around 2,000 at the Cheltenham Literature Festival yesterday.
“I have a lot of things on my laptop currently,” she said. “I know what my next book for adults will be, [although] it’s not very far on – but I have a couple of things for children that are nearly done and I think probably I’ll do one of those next.”
However, any Harry Potter fans hoping to hear Rowling announce a return for the boy wizard – or indeed the birth of a new hero with franchise potential – were disappointed. Speaking about her upcoming children’s projects, Rowling confirmed: “These are discrete stories, they aren’t part of a series.”
