The X Factor 2012: Jahmene Douglas

Everything you need to know about the supermarket price-tagger with the big soul voice

Age: 21

From: Swindon

Category: Boys

Mentor: Nicole Scherzinger

Bio: Asda worker Jahmene impressed the panel at his audition but faltered at boot camp and, during his spell in the judges’ houses, admitted: “I am not confident at all, with any aspect of myself.”

“Singing is my way of expressing myself because talking is not my strong point at all,” he said. “I laugh after everything I say, it probably annoys people but I just can’t help it.”

Despite his lack of confidence, though, Jahmene’s performance of David Guetta’s Titanium impressed Nicole and Ne-Yo. “The X Factor is helping me grow and if I get through it will help me believe in myself a bit more,” said a grateful Jahmene. “I need this…I really do need this.”

What we said: “Jahmene had a nervous tic, a wide smile and an astounding soul scream of a voice that he hurled towards At Last by Etta James: an incredible range, with another incredible range on top of it. Could this be the year of the nerd?” (week one)

RT predicts: Is his humility and nervousness endearing or annoying? How much appetite does Britain have for freakish high notes? Jahmene can be amazing but probably won’t quite go all the way. 4th
