Drugs Live: The Ecstasy Trial – the Twitter reaction

Find out what the Twitterati made of Channel 4's ground-breaking and controversial show

Boasting a bespoke hash(!)tag that rarely left the screen, last night’s Drugs Live: the Ecstasy Trial was prime Twitter fodder and viewers took to the microblogging site in droves to share their reactions to the show.

With the subject matter at hand, it’s unsurprising that the programme elicited reactions ranging from the solemn…

…to the joyously irreverent:

There was precious little condemnation to be found on Twitter for the public use of drugs on the programme, but there was a good deal of sniggering from celebrities watching from the sidelines:

Drugs Live also created a new breakout star in the form of Shabs, a lifelong E-user who popped up throughout the programme to regale the audience with occasionally shocking tales of his experiences on ecstasy.

Indeed, the guy proved so popular with viewers that he’s already spawned a Facebook page (558 ‘likes’ at the time of writing) and was still trending on Twitter at 10 o’clock this morning.

But despite the laughs the programme provoked, Drugs Live also earned several snipes about its production values and scientific worth:

Ultimately though, Drugs Live seemed to have driven quite a few of Twitter’s users to similar conclusions about MDMA…

…other users still remained unconvinced about both the show and Ecstasy:

The second part of Drugs Live: The Ecstasy Trial is on Channel 4 tonight at 10:00pm.
