The Tree of Life – 7.30pm, Sky Movies Indie

Terrence Malick directs this strange and ambitious work that tells the story of a 1950s Texan family whilst taking us back to the beginnings of the world itself. Starring Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain and Sean Penn. 

District 9 – 9.00pm, Film4

Inspired science fiction action drama. After thirty years of residence, a race of aliens is being evicted from Johannesburg. Starring Sharlto Copley.

One Day in September – 11.20pm, BBC2

Storyville documentary that looks into the Munich Olympics hostage crisis in September 1972. Narrated by Michael Douglas.

Asylum – 12.55am, Film4

Natasha Richardson, Ian McKellen and Downton’s Hugh Bonneville star in this 50s-set melodrama about a woman who has an affair with a patient in a mental institution.

The Good Die Young – 3.35am, Channel 4
