The sharpest of eye-wateringly sharp political satires The Thick of It returns on Saturday 8 September, and the BBC have released a trailer to get us excited.
Billed in the teaser as The Thick of It: Coalition, this series looks as if it might address some of the deeper internal fractures facing the government. The feeling of impending unease is helped along by the use of Zack Hemsey’s Mind Heist – a tune made famous by the trailer for Christopher Nolan epic Inception – which rumbles menacingly in the background.
The 30-second video features quick-cut clips of the new series, though relatively little of the show’s undoubted star, the foul-mouthed Malcolm Tucker (played with visceral ferocity by Peter Capaldi).
Fans of Armando Iannucci’s hilarious writing have been stuck without Tucker antics for nearly three years, since the last series was broadcast in 2009. The schedules haven’t been completely devoid of his penetrating wit, however, as Sky customers have been able to enjoy a summer filled with the first season of his new HBO comedy Veep, shown in eight parts on Sky Atlantic.
Returning to the verbally-abusive fray, along with Capaldi, are Rebecca Front (fresh from her recent series of Lewis) as Nicola Murray MP, Chris Addison as Special Advisor Ollie Reeder, and Joanna Scanlan as Waitrose-employee-turned-civil-servant Terri Coverley.
