The second Expendables movie has only been out for a few days but, as it’s made a fortune at the box office, inevitably there’s already been lots of talk about a sequel.
For anyone unacquainted with the series, the gimmick of the Expendables films is that they’re basically ensemble pieces which gather together stars from the “golden age” of American action cinema (read: the 1980s).
Written by and starring Sylvester Stallone, the second Expendables film featured turns from veterans like Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris, Dolph Lundgren and Jean-Claude Van Damme alongside newer kickers of the backside like Jason Statham, Randy Couture and Liam Hemsworth.
And while it’s an impressive cast that leaves few action stars from yesteryear unaccounted for (save, perhaps, poor old Steven Seagal), the rumours have already started up about which legendary big-screen hard-men of days gone by might be tempted to star in The Expendables 3 if when it gets made.
Director Simon West, who helmed Expendables 2, has already expressed an interest in getting former James Bond Sean Connery out of retirement for the follow-up, and the film’s producer, Avi Lerner, was even more explicit about who’s on his wish list.
Speaking to Total Film, he said: “We’ve approached Clint Eastwood to be one of the guys; we’ve got a character in mind for him. We’re talking to Harrison Ford.
“I’ll give you one more name: we’ve got Nicolas Cage to play one of the characters. [We want] Wesley Snipes when he comes back from prison…And we’re going to bring Mickey Rourke back, if he won’t be too crazy. I like Mickey.”
Phew! If they carry on at this rate, The Expendables 3 will out-do Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines for the number of names on its poster…
But who would you like to see in an Expendables follow-up? Maybe you’re a cultist who’d like to see Richard Harrison re-grow his ‘tasche and take his place in the line-up, or perhaps you’re a fan of Sigourney Weaver’s Queen-blasting turn in Aliens? Or there’s Hulk Hogan, who’s done a bit of acting in his time… The possibilities are, quite frankly, endless.
So let’s hear your suggestions for Expendables 3. If you could add a few names to the billboard, who would they be? Pop your suggestions into the comments below and the most creative will win, oh I don’t know, a warm glow of self-satisfaction. Or maybe a Photoshopped movie poster. Something like that. Come on, let’s hear you!
