Olympics 2012: What to Watch Today, Sunday 5 August

Ben Ainslie battles for gold, while Andy Murray plots revenge on Roger Federer - plus gymnastics medallists Louis Smith, Daniel Purvis and Kristian Thomas

PICK OF THE DAY: Andy Murray v Roger Federer in the Men’s Tennis Singles Gold Medal Match

HISTORY IN THE MAKING? Ben Ainslie in the Finn Sailing Medal Race, 2:00pm BBC1, BBC Olympics 9

Athletics: Women’s Marathon

11:00am BBC1, BBC Olympics 3

The clear favourite is the Kenyan, Mary Keitany, who won this year’s London Marathon. Her main rivals – on a slightly curious course that comprises three laps, taking in the City of London, the Embankment and St James’s Park – should be Tiki Gelana of Ethiopia, Lilia Shobukhova of Russia, Edna Kipligat of Kenya and Shalane Flanagan from the US. British hopes rest on Mara Yamauchi and Freya Murray.

Sailing: Star Medal Race

1:00pm BBC3, BBC Olympics 9

Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson in the Star (two-man keelboat) are returning gold medallists. They’ve either been first or second in everything for a very long time and they’re very comfortable in Weymouth, where the race is held. Percy has recovered from a back injury, they’ve got a new boat and they’re going fast. Unless something happens they’re guaranteed gold. Shirley Robertson

Gymnastics: Men’s Floor Exercise Final

2:00pm BBC2, BBC Olympics 4

Japanese athlete Kohei Uchimura is really dominant in every field and he will be looking to add to his collection of golds on the floor in his bid to become the best gymnast of the Games.

Most of the top men including the Germans and the Russians look pretty strong, but we will have British interest here, too, in both Daniel Purvis and Kristian Thomas. Christine Still

Men’s Pommel Horse Final

3:41pm BBC2, BBC Olympics 4

Hungarian Krisztian Berki has won most competitions over the past four years so he’ll be the one to watch here. He’s hotly pursued by Britain’s Louis Smith, 23, who won bronze in Beijing in 2008 and will look to go one or two better. The two have already gone head to head at the Europeans where Berki came out on top. But Louis does have the most difficult routine on the circuit, so if he can give a flawless performance then he’s got a real chance of gold. Christine Still
