Doctor Who – first official series 7 shot of Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and The Asylum of the Daleks

The Doctor carries an unconscious Amy Pond through two fiery rows of Daleks in a newly released promo image for the opening episode

If we didn’t already know that Amy and Rory were bowing out in episode five of the new series of Doctor Who, this first shot from opening adventure Asylum of the Daleks might convince us Ms Pond was looking at a far earlier exit.

It shows a bruised and battered Doctor carrying an unconscious Amy and flanked by two rows of Daleks, which seem to be combusting even as they fire at the pair.

Doctor Who executive producer Caro Skinner has already promised fans the episode will feature “every kind of Dalek ever faced by the Time Lord – including the legendary Special Weapons Dalek,” while Steve Moffat has warned “The Daleks are coming back and they’re worse than ever. Just you wait until you see what they’re going to do.” But exactly what the Asylum of the Daleks is, we still don’t know.

The intriguing new shot is released ahead of the 90-second TV trailer for the series, which premieres tonight at 8pm on BBC1, and features clips from all of the first five episodes, which air later this year and culminate in Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill’s departure.

They’ll be followed by the Christmas special, introducing new companion Jenna-Louise Coleman, before the concluding eight episodes in 2013.
