Classic noirish adaptation of Graham Greene’s thriller starring Joseph Cotton and Orson Welles. Writer Holly Martins returns to Vienna after the conclusion of the Second World War to find his old friend Harry Lime is dead and was involved in racketeering. 

Girl with a Pearl Earring – 9:00pm, BBC4

A shy girl (Scarlett Johansson) living in the Dutch Republic in 1665 is sent to work as a maid in the household of painter Johannes Vermeer (Colin Firth). She soon becomes drawn into the painter’s secretive world and, under the watchful eye of his jealous wife, begins to form a potentially damaging intimacy. 

Legally Blonde – 10pm, Sky Living

Ditsy blonde Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) is dumped by her rich boyfriend Warner but hatches a cunning plan to win him back by applying to join him at Harvard University.

Crime thriller starring Dennis Quaid who won plaudits for his performance as Dexter Cornell, an English professor who reports his own murder after being given a deadly poison that takes 48 hours to kill its victim.

James Stewart plays John “Scottie” Ferguson – a San Francisco police detective whose vertigo forces him to resign and accept a commission from an old friend to trail his suicidal wife.

Puppet fantasy drama starring James McAvoy as the son of the Emperor of Hebalon, who dies leaving a note urging his successor to make peace with their ancient enemies the Zeriths. But the note is destroyed by his brother who is intent on escalating the conflict.
