Johnny Depp to star in new Wes Anderson film The Grand Budapest Hotel

The American director will follow up Moonrise Kingdom with a darker story set in Europe

Moonrise Kingdom director Wes Anderson has cast Johnny Depp in his next film, The Grand Budapest Hotel, according to US reports. The actor, known for his eccentric roles in Pirates of the Caribbean and Edward Scissorhands, is likely to begin filming after he wraps on his latest project, The Lone Ranger.

Details of the new film to be written and directed by Anderson are still scarce, but it is known to be set in Europe. The American director, who will ditch his normal policy of leaving a gap between his movies, has previously revealed that the project is “not very family friendly”, a notable departure from his recent work.

Anderson is known for his regular repertory of actors, leading many to assume favoured names such as Bill Murray and Owen Wilson will land roles in The Grand Budapest Hotel. Other stars who have been linked to the project include Jude Law, Angela Lansbury, Jeff Goldblum and Willem Dafoe.

Moonrise Kingdom, starring Edward Norton, Bruce Willis and Bill Murray, was critically acclaimed and has earned $40m at the box office.
