He may be America’s latest high-profile divorcee, but Tom Cruise received a belated birthday present today when he was named the highest paid actor in Hollywood.
The 50-year-old earned a whopping £47.5m between May 2011 and May 2012 thanks to his recent blockbuster Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol which grossed nearly £450m worldwide.
Many have questioned Cruise’s sustained earning-power following his sofa acrobatics on The Oprah Winfrey Show back in 2004 and his close affiliation with the Church of Scientology, but he has blown away all competition over the previous 12 months.
The Top Gun star’s bumper pay package is followed by last year’s top earner Leonardo DiCaprio and comedian Adam Sandler, who both banked an impressive £23m. DiCaprio’s demotion follows the disappointing J. Edgar whilst Sandler’s earnings include his hefty paycheck from 2011’s Jack and Jill, in which he plays dual roles and received less than positive reviews.
Rounding-off the top five are wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson sitting pretty on £22m from action flick Fast Five and funny man Ben Stiller with £21m.
The British contingent is represented by outrageous Dictator star Sacha Baron Cohen at joint 6th followed by Twilight’s Robert Pattinson, who failed to match his pouty girlfriend Kristen Stewart’s highest paid actress title.
