Cheryl Cole’s ‘Call My Name’ becomes fastest selling single of 2012

The former X Factor judge's new single sold 152,000 copies in its first week, beating the previous record held by Gary Barlow

Cheryl Cole has stormed the charts this week with Call My Name, the lead single from her third studio album A Million Lights. The single sold 152,000 copies in its first week, becoming the fastest selling song of the year so far.

Cole claimed the coveted top spot from Gary Barlow, who last week set the previous record with Sing, the official Diamond Jubilee song that sold 142,000 copies. The former Girls Aloud star also staved off fierce competition from Coldplay’s collaboration with Rihanna – Princess of China – and Flo Rida, who remained at number two with Whistle.

The record-breaking single is Cole’s third number one to date, and third fastest seller following the success of her 2009 debut Fight For This Love and 2010 hit Promise This.

Barlow congratulated the singer after hearing the news, tweeting, “Massive congrats on the number 1 @CherylCole”, to which she replied, “Thank you Mr. OBE. Proud of you ;)”.

Her latest album A Million Lights, which was released today, has already topped the iTunes chart, suggesting it could reach number one in the UK albums chart this Sunday.

The singer this morning tweeted, “You’ve done it to me again.. I woke up to A Million Lights @ 1 on itunes. You lot are killing me!! Thank you sooo much #havingamoment”.

The news comes after Cole announced earlier this week she would be undertaking her first ever solo UK and Ireland arena tour in October.
