“When I say ‘run’ – run!” Doctor Who’s Matt Smith to carry Olympic torch in Cardiff

The Eleventh Doctor will begin the relay first thing on Saturday morning - will you be there to cheer him on?

Doctor Who star Matt Smith is to kick off Saturday’s Cardiff to Swansea leg of the Olympic torch relay, the BBC has confirmed.

The 29-year old Doctor Who star will be the first runner on the initial half-hour section between Cardiff and Dinas Powys which marks day eight of the 70-day relay.

He is one of a total of 8,000 runners to carry the torch the 8,000 miles around the United Kingdom on its journey to the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics on Friday 27 July.

Smith said: “To carry the Torch is an honour – one I thought I’d never get – I’m very excited!”

A former Leicester City youth footballer, Smith should have no problem with the run – how many fans will get out of bed in time for the estimated 6:29am start remains to be seen…

Further details of the relay route and video coverage can be found on the official BBC website.
