First photos of Quentin Tarantino’s western Django Unchained released

New shots give fans their first glimpses of Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio in action

The first two images of Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming western Django Unchained have been released.

Django Unchained, which is scheduled to be released on Christmas Day in the States, tells the tale of Django, a slave-turned-bounty hunter who journeys across America to rescue his wife from the hands of a ruthless Mississippi plantation owner.

In the first shot (above) Django (Jamie Foxx) is seen for the first time, walking alongside Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) in a typical-looking western town.

And the second shows Leonardo DiCaprio as the ruthless and cruel Calvin Candie, who holds Django’s wife prisoner:

Said to be inspired by Sergio Corbucci’s 1966 spaghetti western, Django, Tarantino’s movie boasts an all-star cast, including Samuel L Jackson, Sacha Baron Cohen and Kerry Washington in addition to the actors shown in the new photos.

Jamie Foxx recently expressed admiration for Tarantino’s approach to such a touchy subject as slavery in the film, saying: “There’s a beautiful way [Tarantino] found for the characters to talk to each other. It’s mindblowing. You’ve never heard it this way. You’ve seen movies deal with slavery — or westerns that never dealt with slavery – do it the safe way. This way is like … wow.”

Django Unchained is expected to be released in the UK on 18 January 2013.
