Chelsea 1 The Apprentice 0 in ratings league battle

ITV1's Champions League Live was watched by a million more viewers than BBC1's business reality show

Dyed-in-the-wool Tottenham Hotspur fan Alan Sugar was beaten by his west London rivals last night after Chelsea’s Champions League match against Barcelona on ITV1 outplayed The Apprentice on BBC1.

Champions League Live averaged 7.1 million viewers, a 29.6 per cent audience share, between 7:30pm and 10pm, while coverage of the match itself – which kicked off at 7:45pm and saw Chelsea manage a 1-0 win over Barcelona – averaged around 8 million viewers.

Over on BBC1, meanwhile, Lord Sugar’s business reality show managed an average of just 6.1 million, a 23.9 per cent share for its 9-10pm slot, and a drop of  900,000 from last week’s season high of 7 million.

The football also swept BBC1’s Waterloo Road before it. The school-set drama series was watched by 4.4 million viewers (18.4 per cent) between 8pm and 9pm.
