To Rome with Love is Woody Allen’s latest film, a romcom telling four different tales about the city’s residents and the tourists that visit. Ellen Page and Penélope Cruz star with Jesse Eisenberg and Alec Baldwin.
Woody Allen has written and directed at least one film a year since 1982 and, succeed or fail, they’ve each been quite low-budget movies by Hollywood standards. But it’s the difficulty of raising financing that has meant Allen turned to Europe instead of continuing to film everything in New York City. So with varying critical and box-office success, the archetypal Manhattan film-maker has now made movies in London, Barcelona and Paris.
The most recent, 2011’s Midnight in Paris, saw him win an Oscar for the first time since 1987’s Hannah and Her Sisters.
To Rome with Love is due to be released in Italy in April and then in the US in June but as yet there’s no announced date for the UK. A similar delay happened with Midnight in Paris, which opened in June 2011 but did eventually come to UK cinemas in October of that year.
