Torchwood and Doctor Who star John Barrowman will take a key role in upcoming period drama pilot Gilded Lilys, says the Hollywood Reporter.
Barrowman’s character, Julius Ashford Lily, is the charming son of the Lily family, leading lights of New York’s elite in the late 19th century – though a recent scandal has done some damage to their standing in society.
As well as taking in family rivalries and some juicy secrets, the drama will follow social developments at that time, set against the backdrop of the opening (in 1895) of the first luxury hotel in the city we now know as the Big Apple.
Barrowman’s co-stars include veteran actress Blythe Danner, Friday Night Lights’s Matt Lauria, Maury Sterling (currently on UK screens as Max in Homeland), Brian F O’Byrne, who played Kate Winslet’s husband in mini-series Mildred Pierce, and Californication’s Madeline Zima.
The drama is the brainchild of Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes, who is acting as executive producer alongside Betsy Beers. Gossip Girl’s KJ Steinberg will write the script.
