American actor John Leguizamo has landed the role of Del Boy in the pilot for a US remake of Only Fools and Horses.
Described as “fast-talking and feisty-looking”, Leguizamo has starred in a number of Hollywood films – playing characters including a cold-blooded killer in Carlito’s Way and a Navy Seal in Executive Decision – has lent his voice to the Ice Age animated movie series, and is known to fans of medical TV drama ER as Dr Victor Clemente.
Leguizamo will take on the role of Del, played by David Jason in the long-running British sitcom. The actors playing his brother Rodney and their grandad are yet to be announced but the basic premise of the show – a family of lovable rogues dealing dodgy goods and coming up with get-rich-quick schemes – remains the same.
David Jason recently expressed doubt as to whether an American version of the show would work, saying: “They can do brilliant comedy [in America] but I don’t see that they can bring off Fools and Horses.
“It might work but you’ve got to change it so much that, in the change, in order to Americanise it, do you lose the whole concept of the piece?”
Should the new pilot go no further, Leguizamo’s deal with US network ABC will see him star in and executive produce a single-camera comedy inspired by his professional and personal life in New York City, reports Deadline.
