Daniel Radcliffe’s Woman in Black beats Muppets to UK box office number one

The Harry Potter star helps the Hammer production become the biggest opening in the studio's history

There is life after Harry Potter if the opening weekend of Daniel Radcliffe’s new movie The Woman in Black is anything to go by.

The supernatural horror, adapted from the 1983 novel by Susan Hill, took £3.1 million at the UK box office during its first three days, beating Jason Segel’s much-talked about Muppets movie comeback, which managed £2.6 million.

The figures make The Woman in Black the most successful ever UK opening for studio Hammer – a feat matched last week by its first weekend in the US.

Meanwhile, the 3D re-tooling of Star Wars prequel The Phantom Menace took third spot in the UK, adding £1.5 million to the £50 million the film grossed during its original release in 1999.
