Sex and the City prequel gets go-ahead – but who will play the young Carrie Bradshaw?

The part of a youthful Samantha Jones is also up for grabs in the story of Carrie’s high-school years

Before there was the city, there was high school (whether there was also sex remains to be seen) and the youthful adventures of one Carrie Bradshaw. Now, The Carrie Diaries – based on the prequel book series by Sex and the City creator Candace Bushnell – are coming to TV, with US network The CW having ordered a pilot episode.

The novels follow Carrie during her high-school years in Connecticut. Images of Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker as teen Rusty in Footloose spring to mind – but, of course, you can’t turn back time. No, someone else is going to have to take on that extreme shoe fetish. The question is, who?

Gossip Girl producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are thought to be on board for the pilot and the show’s star, Blake Lively, has long been touted as a good fit for Carrie.

Miley Cyrus, who cameoed in the much-maligned second Sex and the City movie, is another actress interested in the part. She told Access: “I would love it. I’m not attached, so I don’t want to say that, but that would be very cool.”

Carrie’s NYC friends, Miranda and Charlotte, do not feature in the books, and aren’t expected to be involved in the series, but sexaholic Samantha Jones (played in Sex and the City by Kim Cattrall) does, so that part could be up for grabs, too.
