We want more Endeavour! – 97 per cent of RadioTimes.com users demand a full series

Morse creator Colin Dexter and the team behind the drama give their reaction to the news

It attracted more than 6.5m viewers on Monday evening, the highest audience for a new one-off ITV1 drama in five years. And now the results of our poll reveal that Endeavour – the Inspector Morse prequel starring Shaun Evans – is no less popular among RadioTimes.com users.

Over a thousand people have so far voted on the question of whether ITV should commission a full series, with a resounding 97 per cent expressing their desire to see more of the detective’s early career.

Colin Dexter, the creator of Inspector Morse who eagle-eyed viewers may have spotted in Endeavour giving one of his trademark cameo appearances, had this to say of the news: “The gods were smiling on us in that we had a good script from Russell Lewis and I think Shaun Evans is a very admirable and perceptive actor.

“We’ve been extraordinary lucky over the years to have these faithful souls like John Thaw and Kevin Whately. And if this does go to a series, I think Shaun will join them because he’s got the sensitivity and vulnerability that gives people a spark of the more mature Morse.”

Damien Timmer and Michele Buck, executive producers at Mammoth Screen who made the one-off mystery, also gave their reaction: “We’re thrilled with the overwhelming response. The cries for a series are testament to Shaun Evans’s remarkable performance as Detective Constable Morse, and the very tangible chemistry between him and Roger Allam as Detective Inspector Fred Thursday.

“Conversations between Mammoth Screen and ITV1 are ongoing and a decision will be made in due course. Do show your support for Endeavour by voting for its return in the meanwhile.”
