Russell Brand files for divorce from Katy Perry

“Irreconcilable differences” cited in showbiz couple’s split

Russell Brand is seeking a divorce from his pop star wife Katy Perry after just 14 months of marriage.

Brand filed divorce papers in Los Angeles Superior Court today, citing “irreconcilable differences”.

In a statement he said “Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I’ll always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.”

The British comedian, writer and actor, 36, has begun to forge a successful Hollywood career, starring in films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek, and his marriage to the 27-year-old US singer made them one of the most high-profile couples in show business.

Brand had dismissed rumours earlier this month that the marriage was in trouble, telling US talk show host Ellen DeGeneres “I am married to Katy perpetually. Until death do us part was the pledge. I am still alive.”

But more recent reports had suggested the pair had been having problems, and they spent Christmas apart, Brand being photographed in Cornwall and Perry spotted in Hawaii, both apparently without their wedding rings.

Perry has yet to release a statement.
