Tolkien fans, the wait is over – the first trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has finally been released.
The classic tale of Bilbo Baggins and his quest to reclaim a treasure stolen by the evil dragon Smaug has delighted generations of readers young and old since its publication in 1937, but Peter Jackson’s film is the first big-screen adaptation of the novel.
Featuring an all-star cast, including Sherlock’s Martin Freeman as Bilbo, Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Andy Serkis as Gollum and Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey looks set to follow Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings in being another breathtaking spectacle of a film.
The trailer features Ian McKellen’s Gandalf introducing Bilbo to a host of characters from the book, before the assembled company break out into a mournful song.
We’re then treated to views of stunning landscapes and spooky caves, and finally a montage of the film’s action sequences, an appearance by Gollum and a musical nod to the score of The Lord of the Rings.
The film will be released in cinemas next December.
