The first photos of new Countdown host Nick Hewer on the set of the popular teatime game-show have been released.
Hewer, who found fame as one of Lord Sugar’s aides on BBC reality show The Apprentice, was announced as outgoing host Jeff Stelling’s replacement on Countdown in November.
He is the show’s fifth host in Countdown’s 30-year history, and will begin chairing the programme from Monday 9 January 2012.
Rachel Riley (right) and Dictionary Corner mainstay Suzi Dent (left) will continue to appear alongside Hewer on the Channel 4 show, and can be seen with the new host in this picture.
“I’m flattered to have been asked to present such an iconic programme and will work hard to justify sitting in the same seat as such great talents as Jeff Stelling, Des O’Connor and of course the great Richard Whiteley,” said Hewer at the time of his appointment.
“It’s particularly fitting that I should be doing this now as my spelling has started to slip quite badly. I used to be able spell chrysanthemum.”
The Apprentice star reportedly beat such high-profile names as Rory Bremner, Sue Barker and Sir Terry Wogan to the Countdown host’s chair.
Countdown’s executive produce Peter Gwyn is expecting big things from the show with Hewer at the helm, saying: “With Nick at the helm and our 30th birthday next year, we’ve got some very exciting times ahead for Countdown viewers.”
Hewer’s recent appearance on Have I Got News For You was such a success that it lead to the Apprentice aide’s name trending worldwide on microblogging site Twitter.
