It broke box office records over the summer and now The Inbetweeners Movie looks set to do the same on DVD, with sales on course to exceed one million units in its first week of release.
The big-screen E4 spin-off was released on Monday and shifted nearly 600,000 copies during its first day on sale.
Sales had reached 660,000 by the end of Tuesday, more than twice the number of copies that The Hangover Part II sold in its first week on release.
Only the DVD releases of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows parts one and two have exceeded sales of The Inbetweeners Movie in terms of first week business in the past.
HMV said that it expected the DVD to reach 1m sales by the end of the week and, if the film continues to sell at such a rate, the retailer expects it to be the biggest-selling first week for a comedy DVD release ever.
“We’re seeing record sales of The Inbetweeners Movie, which is shaping up to become our biggest-ever week one release on DVD and Blu-ray,” said HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo.
“We’ve always done really well with the TV series – particularly among its core audience of teens and young adult males, but with the movie coming so close to Christmas we’re also seeing huge demand from gift shoppers right now.”
HMV have also sold in excess of 250,000 box sets of The Inbetweeners TV show.
The film, which follows the exploits of four teenage school friends on holiday in Malia, made more than £45m at the box office when it was released in cinemas.
The Inbetweeners, written by Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, ran for three seasons on E4, depicting the adventures of four suburban teenagers and has been lauded for “capturing the feel of adolescence perfectly” by critics.
