Doctor Who Magazine’s Christmas tribute to Radio Times

The new issue of DWM is a homage to one of the earliest RT Christmas covers

They say imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, so consider Radio Times suitably flattered by the front cover of the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, an affectionate pastiche of our 1924 Christmas issue.

The DWM cover – painted by Vince McIndoe and based on the original design by an artist known only as “Abbey” – drops the Doctor (Matt Smith), Amy (Karen Gillan), Rory (Arthur Darvill) and some of the cast of this year’s 1941-set Doctor Who Christmas special into a suitably nostalgic festive scene.

Doctor Who Magazine’s editor, Tom Spilsbury, said: “We felt that such a pastiche suited the retro setting of this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special – particularly as we were able to recast the mother and her two children with the characters in The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe. It’s our tribute to the Radio Times Christmas covers of old!”

The new 100-page issue of Doctor Who Magazine goes on sale on Thursday 15 December, priced £4.99.
