I’m a Celebrity 2011: nearly 10 million watch Dougie Poynter beat Mark Wright to jungle crown

McFly versus The Only Way Is Essex draws a crowd on ITV1

An average audience of 9.6 million people (a 41 per cent share) watched the final of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! on ITV1 last night as Dougie Poynter was crowned king of the jungle in the 11th series of the reality show. Three hundred thousand of that number watched an hour later on ITV1+1.

The programme, which ran from 9:30pm until 10:35pm, saw McFly bass player Dougie Poynter emerge triumphant as a surprise winner in the public vote against the bookies’ hot favourite Mark Wright from The Only Way Is Essex.

Poynter, 24 and from Essex, said: “My head is just spinning at a million miles an hour. I’m a king!”

Wright, also 24 and from Essex, was gracious in defeat, saying of his jungle companion: “There couldn’t be a better winner than this man. He is the nicest, kindest man in the entire world.”

I’m a Celebrity… enjoyed a good inherited audience from The X Factor semi-final, watched by an average audience of 10.3 million people on ITV1 between 8pm and 9:30pm. A further 300,000 people chose to watch Little Mix, Marcus Collins, Misha B and Amelia Lily do vocal battle an hour later on ITV1+1.
