Netflix to launch streaming service in UK and Ireland

Popular US movie rental service will launch here in 2012

Netflix, the popular American on-demand film and TV subscription service, has announced plans to expand into the UK and Ireland in early 2012.

After the launch, new Netflix members will be able to stream and instantly watch a raft of movies and shows on their TVs, computers and smartphones.

Details are sketchy about exactly what content the company’s British and Irish customers can expect, but it is reported that the service will be available for “one low monthly subscription price”. Customers in the US pay approximately £8 for their subscriptions.

Netflix, which has been streaming content to its US customers since 2007, boasts more than 25 million members. The company began life as a postal-based DVD rental service, which differentiated itself from its existing competition by offering unlimited rentals for a monthly fee. Services such as LoveFilm currently offer similar deals in this country.

Netflix had no further comment about the UK and Ireland expansion, but said more details would be released nearer the launch date.
