DVD review: Tucker and Dale vs Evil

A satisfying horror comedy about killer rednecks, out this week

Tucker and Dale vs Evil (Cert: 15, 2010)

4 stars

In a nutshell: A hilarious hillbilly horror with a difference

Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine are instantly likeable as a pair of hapless hillbillies in this short, shaggy but often very funny marriage of buddy comedy and horror spoof. After heading to their new cabin in the forest (a ramshackle pile straight out of The Evil Dead), the duo attempt to save a young college girl from drowning, only to be mistaken for murderous rural lunatics a la Deliverance by her preppy friends.

It’s a silly idea, but the good-hearted backwoodsmen are so appealing and the genre references so well judged that the film can be forgiven its very occasional comic longueurs.
