Hundreds of fans gathered outside BBC Radio 1’s Great Portland Street studios to see One Direction last night but were left disappointed as the boy band was moved to a different location to avoid overcrowding.
“Radio 1 and the police felt it was safer for the young listeners as well as the band if the interview was moved to a secret location,” said a BBC statement.
The band still appeared on the BBC Radio 1 Official Chart Show, being interviewed by host Reggie Yates, and members of the group tweeted apologies to fans. “Just heard guys we’re not coming down now,” wrote Zayn Malik. “Sorry for everyone that’s waited outside.”
The quintet of X Factor stars were on the show to celebrate their first single reaching number one. What Makes You Beautiful sold 153,000 copies in its first week, making it the fastest-selling single of the year so far.
One Direction’s debut album is to be released at Christmas.
