Hugh Grant joins Halle Berry and Tom Hanks in Cloud Atlas

Jim Broadbent, Jim Sturgess and Ben Whishaw will also star in the film version of David Mitchell’s novel

Hugh Grant is the latest big name to sign up to the movie adaptation of Cloud Atlas.

Grant will star alongside Halle Berry, Tom Hanks and Susan Sarandon – as well as fellow Brits Jim Broadbent, Jim Sturgess and Ben Whishaw – in the big-screen version of David Mitchell’s critically acclaimed novel, which was shortlisted for the 2004 Man Booker Prize.

Cloud Atlas follows a reincarnated soul through six separate existences spanning several centuries and its unconventional narrative may explain why three directors have been enlisted.

Wachowski brothers Andy and Larry, best known for creating The Matrix, will helm the movie along with Tom Tykwer, who directed Whishaw in Perfume: the Story of a Murderer.

Cloud Atlas is due to begin filming in Glasgow next month, and will also shoot on location in Spain and Germany.

It’s slated for release in October 2012.
