“Yeah, this weekend I played a gig with a band in London…” Yeah, it sounds like the sort of story Jay would make up to impress Will, Neil and Simon, but this Saturday, it came true.
Not content with three series of The Inbetweeners under his belt and a movie version of the E4 smash hit in the can, it seems James Buckley, best known for portraying serial bulls***ting sixth-former Jay Cartwright on the show, is keen to spread his artistic wings.
This Saturday, Rough Cuts spotted the 23-year-old playing guitar on stage with 90s indie royalty Ocean Colour Scene at the Ben & Jerry’s Sundae Festival in London.
Unannounced, Buckley joined the band as they performed 1996 number six single, The Circle. Despite the rest of the band (and most of the audience) being old enough to be his father, James appeared to have a good time, grinning throughout and taking a bow at the end of the song. The only acknowledgement from the band came when lead singer Simon Fowler looked at James and remarked “bloody mods” as the actor left the stage.
It turns out that this wasn’t the first time the Inbetweener had been involved with the indie beat combo. Earlier in the year, Buckley played guitar for a number of tracks on OCS guitarist Steve Cradock’s solo album.
Mark Twain was right, sometimes the truth can be stranger than fiction.
