MTV looks set to follow up the success of controversial reality series Geordie Shore by ordering a Liverpool-based spin-off of the programme.
Casting is reportedly under way on the new show, tentatively titled Mersey Shore, which will be made by Lime Pictures, the production company behind MTV’s Geordie Shore and ITV2’s The Only Way Is Essex.
Both the ‘…Shore’ programmes are remakes of the MTV US hit series Jersey Shore, which follows the adventures of a group of promiscuous housemates on a summer holiday.
The Newcastle-based show, filled as it is with binge drinking, nudity and violence, has attracted a storm of criticism in this country, with Newcastle MP Chi Onwurah opining that it “borders on porn”.
But it is also MTV UK’s highest rated programme in years, attracting around 320,000 viewers per episode, with a peak of 625,000 people tuning in to the episode that aired on Tuesday 7 June.
MTV are also set to broadcast a Geordie Shore summer special, which will follow the Newcastle cast on holiday in Magaluf, later this year.
Neither MTV nor Lime Pictures responded to our enquiries about the new programme.
