The biographical movie PT 109 from 1963 highlighted the actions of Kennedy as an officer of the United States Navy during World War II.

The American comedian regular impersonated Kennedy on such programmes as The Ed Sullivan Show. He even recorded a comedy album called The First Family, which was a good-natured parody of Kennedy as both Commander-in-Chief and as a member of a large, well-known political family.

Starred in the 1983 mini-series Kennedy but had also previously played Robert F Kennedy in the 1974 drama The Missiles of October. Sheen of course went on to star as fictional president Jed Bartlet in The West Wing.
