Doc Martin to return to ITV1

The Westcountry comedy drama starring Martin Clunes starts filming a fifth series after a two-year break

Martin Clunes is back in Cornwall this week filming a new fifth series of Doc Martin – the first since the hit drama’s last appearance in 2009.

“I have missed our annual visits to Cornwall,” says Clunes. “And I look forward to spending the next few months in this beautiful part of the country. I am thrilled to be able to work with such a fabulous cast, and exciting new storylines.”

Dame Eileen Atkins joins the show as Dr Martin Ellingham’s “cantankerous” Aunt Ruth and guest stars include Julie Graham, Peter Vaughan and Louise Jameson.

The new eight-part series will see Doc Martin coping with fatherhood. ITV says that “a new GP, Dr Di Dibbs (Joanna Scanlan) and her husband have already moved into his old surgery but Dr Ellingham begins to have serious doubts about the competence of Dr Dibbs.”
