Red Dwarf to return for new series

Freeview channel Dave commission new run of classic BBC sci-fi comedy

A new series of cult sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf, featuring the original trio of cast members, is coming to Freeview channel Dave.

Craig Charles, Chris Barrie and Danny John-Jules will reprise their respective roles as slovenly Dave Lister, uptight hologram Arnold J Rimmer and feline humanoid the Cat.

Charles – currently starring as Coronation Street cabbie Lloyd Mullaney, and hosting his own Funk and Soul show on 6 Music – is keen for Red Dwarf to return at its best, saying “We’ve got to recapture the highlights, like series five or six. If we can hit that mark, then brilliant. There’s no point doing it if it’s so-so.”

The show aired on BBC2 between 1988 and 1999 but was resurrected for a three-part special, Red Dwarf: Back To Earth, on Dave in 2009. And the encouraging viewing figures have prompted channel execs to order a new full run.

“It got more viewers than BBC2 and Channel 4 combined on the night,” says Charles. “So they’ve just commissioned another series.”
