This feel-good American cycling movie was a surprise hit with critics, audiences and juries alike, enjoying five Oscar nominations, including best picture, and winning best original screenplay for Steve Tesich. British director Peter Yates is best known for Bullitt and imports a similar feel for momentum, albeit two-wheeled, as four working-class high-school graduates (Dennis Christopher, Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern, Jackie Earl Haley) enter a team in a posh college race. Filmed around Indiana University Bloomington, Breaking Away mixes breezy comedy and hormonal awkwardness with exhilarating action, and will have you out of your seat cheering the outcome. Andrew Collins
