Director William Wyler was on an unimpeachable roll in the late 1930s and 40s, from Wuthering Heights (1939) to The Heiress (1949), during which time he partnered with cinematographer Gregg Toland and cast the great Bette Davis twice, in The Letter and this 1941 adaptation by Lillian Hellman of her own play set among the patriarchal southern aristocracy of the early 20th-century. Davis is striking as the strong-willed sister of two wealthy brothers, who nevertheless desire her inheritance from sickly husband Herbert Marshall. Blackmail and manipulation ensue in a handsome-looking, high-class melodrama that was Oscar-nominated for best picture (it lost to How Green Was My Valley).
