ANDREW COLLINS: FILM OF THE DAY
Due Date ★★★
Premiere 9.00-11.00pm C5
Todd Phillips had already directed Road Trip, so he was on fairly safe ground with this romp, a sort of Planes, Trains and Automobiles for a post-9/11 world. Here, two total strangers, Zach Galifianakis’s hairy, guileless actor and uptight expectant father Robert Downey Jr, are thrown off a plane to LA after a misunderstanding about a bomb, and find themselves stranded. Desperate to get home for the birth of his baby and without his wallet, Downey Jr agrees to give Galifianakis and his cone-wearing pug a lift if he pays for the rental car. Of course, the bickering starts there. We’ve seen odd couples in vehicles before, but the tension is palpable and neither is officially the bad guy. Cameos abound on this hellish picaresque-against-time: Jamie Foxx, Juliette Lewis, rapper RZA, Charlie Sheen and Danny McBride(TV’s Eastbound and Down), and then comic business with marijuana, guns and a relative’s ashes at the Grand Canyon keep the action fast and literally furious.
King of Kings ★★★★
12.25-3.00pm BBC2
Some films more or less schedule themselves and just as Yuletide has White Christmas, so Easter Sunday has this epic story featuring Jeffrey Hunter as Jesus and a typically authoritative narration by Orson Welles.
Hop ★★★
4.25-6.15pm C4
The heir to the Easter Bunny business doesn’t fancy a life delivering chocolate so heads to LA to become a rock drama in this part-animated comedy that features the voice talents of Russell Brand.
Inglourious Basterds ★★★
11.00pm-1.45am C4
Quentin Tarantino’s twisted history-bending homage to war movies stars Brad Pitt as a Nazi-hunting commander on a mission to blow up Hitler in Paris. The superb soundtrack goes without saying.
Love Is All You Need ★★★
Premiere 10.00-11.50pm BBC4
A cancer sufferer whose husband is having an affair bonds with a widower she meets at her daughter’s wedding. Pierce Brosnan and Trine Dyrholm star.
