Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Although not quite as captivating as Disney's 1991 animated classic, director Bill Condon's live-action remake of the fairy tale is a spectacular success in terms of production values and design. Emma Watson plays Belle, who is held captive by the cursed Beast (Dan Stevens) in his castle, where she slowly falls for his charms. Among the main tweaks to the story are extended backstories explaining the fate of Belle's mother and the sexuality of LeFou (Josh Gad), the sidekick of arrogant hunter Gaston (Luke Evans). New songs (with lyrics by Tim Rice) augment the now evergreen favourites, with the Busby Berkeley-inspired Be Our Guest the undisputed showstopper. The film should also be applauded for incorporating themes of ethnic tolerance and feminism among the more traditional components.
