2. Live by Night – Denis Lehane

What’s the book about?

Denis Lehane (the man who brought us The Wire) takes us on a journey to 1920s Boston where smalltime thief Joe Coughlin (Ben Affleck) meets Emma Gould (Sienna Miller). He’s told to cuff her while his pals knock off the casino she works at but Joe falls head over heels for her and decides to handle the situation a little differently.

It’s that sequence of events that sets him on the road to becoming one of the nation’s most feared and respected gangsters. Expect violence, double-crossing, drama and pain in this “journey into the soul of prohibition-era America”.

3. Fifty Shades Darker – EL James

What’s the book about?

Expect another surge in sales of the Fifty Shades franchise as the second novel hits the big screen this year. Fifty Shades Darker catches up with Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) as he’s trying to win back the considerably cautious Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson).

4. Hidden Figures: The Untold Story of the African American Women Who Helped Win The Space Race – Margot Lee Shetterly

What’s the book about?

Now here’s a real-life story that does exactly what it says on the tin. Margot Lee Shetterly tells the previously untold true story of NASA’s African-American female mathematicians who served as ‘Human Calculators’, using pencils and paper to write the equations that would eventually send rockets and astronauts into space.

5. Wonder – RJ Palacio

What’s the book about?

10-year-old Auggie (Jacob Tremblay) feels like an ordinary kid and does things that ordinary kids do, so he really can’t understand why the other children scream when they see him, or why people stare at him wherever he goes. His parents (Owen Wilson and Julia Roberts) have homeschooled him his whole life because he was born with a facial abnormality, so now that it’s time for him to go to a real school the nerves are setting in.

All Auggie wants is to be accepted, but will his new classmates ever be convinced that he’s just like them?

6. A Dog’s Purpose – W Bruce Cameron

What’s the book about?

Brace yourself dog lovers, this one tells the tale of a dog who dies several times over as he’s reincarnated as various breeds of our four legged friends. It takes several life and death experiences, during which the titular dog teaches humans how to live, laugh and love, for the little dog (voiced by Josh Gad) to fufill his purpose.

7. The Zookeeper’s Wife – Diane Ackerman

What’s the book about?

As Germany invades Poland Jan (Daniel Bruhl) and Antonina Zabinski (Jessica Chastain) lose most of the animals in their Warsaw zoo when they’re bombed or stolen away to Berlin. But the duo decide to make their loss someone else’s gain and begin smuggling Jews into the empty cages. The pair don’t stop there, hiding ‘guests’ inside their villa and offering them a safe haven in ‘The House Under a Crazy Star’.

People aren’t the only thing they’re hiding though – as Jan becomes increasingly involved in the anti-Nazi resistance ammunition and explosives are concealed in enclosures and the animal hospital. And while all this is happening Antonina is working hard to keep her house’s human and animal inhabitants – otters, a badger, hyena pups and lynxes – afloat as the world crumbles around them.

10. The Mountain between Us – Charles Martin

Agatha Christie’s classic Hercule Poirot tale sees the detective (played here by Kenneth Brannagh) attempting to solve the mysterious murder of a wealthy American on board the most famous train in the world. And with a cast featuring Judi Dench, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penelope Cruz, Josh Gad, Michael Pena andJohnny Depp it really is bound to be a rather famous train.
