Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Franco Nero and Corinne Clery are the bickering married couple caravanning across America who pick up a hitch-hiker in a luridly brutal sex thriller from former erotic comedy director Pasquale Festa Campanile. For the hitcher is a psychopathic bank robber intent on rape, abuse and humiliation as he forces his captives to drive to the Mexican border. Very much in The Last House on the Left shocker tradition (both feature cult sleaze actor David Hess), this has a sharper than expected script that revels in the psychological battle of wits between the cynically-etched trio while wallowing in the violent degradation typical of 1970s Italian genre product. Composer Ennio Morricone once more counterpoints the sadistic misogyny with a hauntingly atmospheric score, and this is well acted, ably directed and unpleasantly tense and nihilistic.
