Summary

Crime drama set in the infamous red light district of Paris, with a cast that includes both actors and residents of the area. The friendship between Vera, a stripper, and Fifi, a petty thief, becomes strained when Fifi begins to want more than just a platonic relationship. But when the violence that surrounds them on the street bursts into their lives through the murder of a friend, life for Vera and Fifi can never be the same again.

Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Karim Dridi clearly set out to produce a throbbing portrait of Paris's notorious red-light district for his directorial debut. What he actually delivers in the doomed relationship between pickpocket François Renaud and stripper Vera Briole is a naive melodrama, in which clumsy caricatures veer from one clichéd situation to another, all to the incessant beat of bad pop music. Supposedly shot in the name of authenticity, the insights into peep-show life and the brutal realities of the streets beneath the neon signs are not only voyeuristic, but also exploitative of the many real-life prostitutes, pimps and punters Dridi captured with his hand-held camera.
