Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

With their Scary Movie franchise well established, the Wayans family has cut a thin if inventive groove in the parody genre. This well-produced debut feature from Damien Dante Wayans spoofs the likes of High School Musical, Fame and other teen dance films. The familiar plot follows a young interracial couple (Damon Wayans Jr and Shoshana Bush) as they join forces to win a dance competition, providing the excuse for a series of film and TV in-jokes that are high on comic invention if rather low on taste. The gross-out humour often surprises and shocks, especially Amy Sedaris as the aptly named dance teacher Ms Cameltoe. But it is the fantastic choreography and sparkling performances, including Essence Atkins's terrific comic turn, that makes this so irreverently entertaining. It's silly, smart and confident, but those who act their age, and not their shoe size, may not get it.
