Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This remake of Jean-Luc Godard's 1959 classic A Bout de Souffle suffers greatly in comparison, but judged on its own merits it's a fair attempt at an on-the-run-style drama. Driving a stolen car, Richard Gere kills a cop and then heads into the arms of Valérie Kaprisky, a French student with whom he's had a brief affair. As the police close in, Gere seems oblivious to anything other than Kaprisky's rather obvious (and oft displayed) charms, and Jim McBride - who later directed Dennis Quaid and Ellen Barkin in The Big Easy - seems most interested in getting both his actors to display as much flesh as possible. It's stylish if shallow, and Gere fits his superficial role like a glove.
